A couple of episodes ago, Sharan and Sudeep had presented the [6 stages of an FMCG business](https://cobbcast.net/episode/49-kyunki-fortune-500-bhi-kabhi-start-up-thi).

As detailed as it was, many of you wrote in asking where the D2C FMCG businesses would figure in the 6 stages.

Short Answer: They don’t.

Medium Answer:

The core essence of an FMCG business is the width and depth of distribution a Brand can get. This is the traditional moat of the established players. In fact, building distribution is what engulfs these businesses in Stage 2 of their evolution: The Long Chew.

There are businesses that never leave here, for not having built a strong enough Brand to accelerate growth.

The D2C Brands, have tried to circumvent this stage - jumping straight from Concept to Acceleration - by leaning the eCom platforms.

Can the D2C Brands succeed in this endeavour?

Will they manage to breach the traditional FMCG moat with eCom optimization?

At the end of the D2C rainbow, will we find pots of gold or be jumped by the leprechauns?
